Whitsand Bay Map
Whitsand Bay Photo

Probably South East Cornwall's best beach with a 3 mile stretch of perfect sand but access to the beach is very steep and only the Tregonhawke part of the beach has toilets. The beach can be used for surfing but there are rip currents and the lifeguard service has been cancelled to save money. The western end of the beach is closed during Tregantle Fort firing range operation

Directions:
Whitsand Bay is 24 miles from Plymouth. Take the A38 from Plymouth. At Trerulefoot, turn left onto the A374. Two miles after Polbathic turn right on the B3247 to Crafthole. At Crafthole turn left and continue on the B3247. There is a poorly marked car park just before the turning to Freathy. To park closer to the beach follow the Freathy road and there are a number of parking options along the coast road. There are steep paths down to the beach at Tregantle, Sharrow Point, Freathy and Tregonhawke

Parking:1 car park and limited layby parking at Tregantle (the path at Tregantle is closed during firing times). 1 car park at Sharrow Point. Road parking and field car parking at Tregonhawke. There are also other fields opened for parking in summer

Toilets:Only at Tregonhawke (which is some distance from Tregantle, Sharrow Point and Freathy)

Facilities:Cafe's at Tregonhawke

Activities:Surfing

Safety:There are rip currents, check warning signs. No lifeguards. The western part of the beach is closed during firing range operation at Tregantle Fort, firing times are indicated by a red flag. The path to the beach at Sharrow Point, Freathy and Tregonhawke are steep and slippery and are not suitable for wheelchairs. There is a risk of being cut off at high tide, so keep close to beach access points

Dogs:Dogs allowed all year
